THE VINKEVEEN LAKES

The Vinkeveen Lakes can be found in a nature reserve and water sports area in the north-west of the Dutch province of Utrecht, to the north-east of the village of Vinkeveen. Other destinations nearby are Baambrugge, Loenersloot, Waver and Abcoude. The A2 motorway runs close to the lakes, while the N201 is actually routed through them.

The lakes thank their popularity with water sports fans to their central location, amongst other things. A whole range of recreational facilities are available alongside and on the water; the lakes are the ideal place to swim, sail, dive and water ski, to name just a few of the activities possible. There are also a number of marinas, with moorings, water and power facilities, showers and restaurants.

The Vinkeveen Lakes open onto the River Amstel. They were created from the Dutch Golden Age onwards, when turf from the area was extracted from the area and taken to Amsterdam. Today’s elongated islands are peat dikes that were once used as drying fields for wet turf. The peat pools left in

the place once occupied by the dredged peat have gradually grown in size over the years to become the lakes you see today.

The area is managed by the Vinkeveen Lakes leisure authority (Recreatieschap Vinkeveense Plassen) and the municipalities of De Ronde Venen and Amsterdam. However, since Amsterdam decided to withdraw from the partnership in 2011, activities have become uncertain. At the beginning of 2014, a plan was launched to transfer management to the Stichtse Groenland leisure authority (Recreatieschap Stichtse Groenlanden). This plan covers a number of subjects, including the sale of a number of small islands to private individuals and the investment of millions of euros in maintenance of the islands.

The lakes are very deep in some places: depths of 53 metres have been recorded in some areas, which is deeper than large parts of the North Sea.
