The Amsteldijk is located outside the former city walls of Amsterdam and until 1896 only the part North of the current Ceintuurbaan was within the municipal boundaries (the remaining part was in the municipality of Nieuwer-Amstel, now Amstelveen). Previously the Amsteldijk was called "Utrechtsezijde", which name was still used until around the beginning of the twentieth century, even after "Amsteldijk" was established as the official name. At the beginning of the Amsteldijk (as seen from the city) the barge used to leave for Utrecht.
