Can I rent a house without a real estate agent?

Of course you can get to work yourself. Keep the timeframe in mind: by when do you need a house or apartment? It's not very wise, for example, to start looking over 8 weeks in advance, because there won't be much available online yet. The rental market moves a lot faster than the owner-occupied market. Plan two days to take your time and view all the options, about 4 to 6 weeks before your official move.

What should I look out for?

It's important to know that in The Hague, we talk about 'gestoffeerde' (semi-furnished) or 'gemeubileerde' (furnished) rent. 'Gestoffeerd' means that floors, ceiling lights, kitchen appliances, laundry machine/tumble dryer and curtains will stay behind. In case of 'gemeubileerde' rent, everything stays behind, from sofas, beds, chairs and tables to cutlery and kitchen towels. Make sure your documents are in order, like a copy of your passport and an employer's statement. Always look for a listed agent, so you won't run into any unpleasant surprises, like double payments or contract costs.
