The canal is named after the 19th century poet and prose writer Isańc da Costa (1798-1860). Besides the canal and the quay, there are also the Da Costastraat (parallel to the canal) and the Da Costaplein (in the street). On 14 August 1942, at the insistence of the German occupiers, a number of Amsterdam street names were changed by order of mayor Edward Voűte. These were streets named after the Dutch royal family or Jews. Until the end of the Second World War in 1945 it was called the Gouverneurskade.
