At the height of the Golden Age, the rich Amsterdam patrician Cornelis Pauw had a new house built on Herengracht in The Hague. His home is on what we now call number 19/19a. A few years after Cornelis Pauw, Michiel Pauw had his own city palace built right next to his family member.
In the course of the four centuries, those original buildings have of course changed, but the floor plans have largely remained the same.
Herengracht numbers 17 and 19 have been built and inhabited since 1647. It was given its current façade view in 1870. The Hague once described Herengracht as a 'building of general interest for the municipality of The Hague because of its beauty and its architectural-historical value as an exceptionally rich example of eclecticism in the architecture of the third quarter of the 19th century. "
The Herengracht is currently undergoing a real revival. The residential function has returned, the canal has recently been restored to its former glory by beautiful pavements and beautiful benches.
Seen from the Herengracht, the modern ministries form a contrasting backdrop: contemporary versus classic. On work days, cyclists and walkers in particular travel along the Herengracht. On Sundays the Herengracht is peaceful.
This monumental building was completely renovated in 2018, with all elements of historical value documented and preserved. For example, the image-defining windows with the many window panes remained intact. Naturally modernized and equipped with contemporary insulation.
