When a lot of land was reclaimed beyond the old sea dike (St. Antoniesdijk) a summer quay, or kadijk, was laid out. Originally people referred to it as the new sea dike but this name fell out of use. When a further raising of this new dike was done, people referred to the Laagte (Lower) and the Hoogte (Upper) parts of the Kadijk. Until 1943, the Tussen (Middle) Kadijken was called Korte Kerkstraat. This was because it followed the route of the Plantage Kerklaan, but was never connected to it.
