History "De Pijp"
The new district that arose behind the Paleis van Volksvlijt around 1900 was officially called Buurt YY, but was soon renamed De Pijp. The new district quickly developed into a vibrant district. Several well-known Dutch writers rented a room here, such as Herman Heijermans, Frederik van Eeden and Bordewijk. Eduard Jacobs laid the foundation for Dutch cabaret in De Pijp. The district was soon known as the "Quartier Latin" of Amsterdam and it still has that reputation. André Hazes has always sung here and he has been immortalized by means of a statue on the Albert Cuyp.
There are several stories about the meaning of the (nick) name De Pijp. In 1892, De Pijp was compared to a pipe drawer in which long, wide pipes lie, which early in the morning 'cloud' people 'blew out' people on their way to work. However unclear the origin of the name is, everyone now speaks about De Pijp and everyone wants to live there ...
