Zoeterwoude

Zoeterwoude is a municipality in the province of South Holland and is located a 20 minutes’ drive away from Leiden. Zoeterwoude is known for its number of cheese farms. Moreover, Heineken’s biggest brewery is located here. It was opened in 1975, and it is probably Zoeterwoude’s most famous asset. Zoeterwoude is divided into Zoeterwoude-Dorp and Zoeterwoude-Rijndijk. To the west of Zoeterwoude-Dorp, the Zelden van Passe is located, also known as De Grote Westeinder. This is a drainage mill that was built in 1942 to pump the water from the Groote Westeindscher Polder. Nowadays the mill only runs on a voluntary basis.
